Police: Tony Romo had open bottle of alcohol in car when arrested
Recent reports from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office provide new details regarding the arrest of former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current NFL analyst Tony Romo. Law enforcement officials confirm that an open container of alcohol was discovered in the passenger side of Romo's vehicle during an inventory search following a traffic stop on July 23.
Police documents indicate that the incident began on Interstate 43 when officers observed Romo passing other vehicles in a restricted gore area. When questioned by deputies, Romo requested clarification on the definition of a gore area. Further reports describe that Romo appeared to have red, glassy eyes and an odor of alcohol, leading deputies to perform a series of field sobriety tests.
According to records released by local authorities, Romo performed poorly on these tests and was taken into custody. Additional citations reveal that he refused to submit to a chemical test for intoxication after his arrest. Body camera footage shows the former NFL star explaining to officers that he had been traveling from a local golf course to visit family members in the area.
The 46-year-old analyst has been a prominent figure in NFL coverage since he retired from professional play in 2017. Throughout his career, he secured four Pro Bowl appearances and remains the franchise leader in touchdown passes for the Dallas Cowboys. His next scheduled court appearance is set for September 21 to address the charges.
