MacFarland settled in with Predators after 'whirlwind' start as new GM

Chris MacFarland is settling into his new role as president of hockey operations and general manager for the Nashville Predators. After an eleven-year tenure with the Colorado Avalanche, MacFarland made the move on June 2, facing an immediate stretch of high-pressure tasks including the NHL Draft, the combine, and the opening of free agency.

His recent appearance at the World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor, Ontario, marks his first scouting trip in his new capacity. MacFarland is prioritizing getting to know the organization's prospects, including first-round draft pick Wyatt Cullen. The Predators have seven prospects participating in the tournament, providing the front office an opportunity to observe them in competitive game environments.

Since joining the organization, MacFarland has been active in roster construction. He brought in experienced personnel like Rob Blake and Jamie Langenbrunner to support hockey operations. He also executed several trades to add forward depth, acquiring players such as Mavrik Bourque, Ross Colton, and Jack Drury. A primary focus for the new management is ensuring a strong start to the season, as the team previously struggled to recover from a slow opening period last year.

Looking ahead, MacFarland maintains a focus on long-term growth. While he continues to look for ways to improve the roster, specifically seeking to add puck skill to the defensive core, his goal is to build a group capable of sustained success. He emphasizes that the team must approach each day with a clear process to eventually reach a level where they are consistent contenders for the Stanley Cup.
