A Florida man currently sits in the Gwinnett County Jail after police say he posed as an internet technician to commit a theft at a local gym. According to investigators, the suspect, Shaneal Patel, accessed the server room at an Onelife Fitness location in March. He convinced employees he was authorized to perform work on the network. Once inside the restricted area, he installed a device known as a helium hotspot.
While the device itself is legal to own, the setup allowed Patel to profit from the gym’s internet connection. The hotspot generates cryptocurrency rewards whenever it processes data traffic, effectively forcing the business to pay for his passive income. Patel essentially shifted his power and internet bills onto the gym while keeping the earnings for himself.
Security experts point out that these devices only generate a modest amount of money per month, often ranging from a few dollars to roughly 100 dollars per location. However, Patel allegedly targeted multiple sites to build his returns. Police are currently investigating similar incidents across three other counties where Patel faced scrutiny.
Information security professionals emphasize the need for businesses to lock their network closets as securely as they protect their physical registers. Wiring cabinets are often overlooked, yet they provide direct access to a company's infrastructure. Patel remains in custody as officials in Carroll County, Coweta County, and Peachtree City prepare their own cases against him.
