The Philippines and Australia are narrowing the gap for cross-border financial transactions. During the 2026 Philippine Tech Mission hosted by Austrade, financial leaders focused on creating faster, secure pathways for the more than 408,000 Filipinos and 40,000 students living in Australia who rely on these channels to support their families back home.
Ren-ren Reyes, President and CEO of G-Xchange Inc., represented GCash at the event, emphasizing the importance of modernizing remittance infrastructure. The goal is to move away from legacy systems and move toward near real-time value transfers. This shift relies on integrating technologies such as blockchain, stablecoins, and artificial intelligence to handle currency conversion and risk assessment with greater accuracy.
GCash has already started this transition with its international transfer service. Now operating in 16 countries, including Australia, the platform allows users to send money directly from their e-wallets. The service aims to cut costs for users by charging lower fees than traditional banking institutions while providing real-time tracking for both the sender and the recipient. This approach is designed to assist not just individuals sending money to relatives, but also small businesses that need to settle international payments quickly.
The mission brought together key figures from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and private sector leaders to align their strategies with the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028 and Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040. By coordinating their digital frameworks, the two nations aim to replace outdated transfer methods with a more efficient, secure environment. These efforts mark a shift toward a financial system that prioritizes speed and transparency for everyone involved.
