Walmart is changing its checkout process. After years of relying on its own payment system, the retail giant plans to accept tap-to-pay options including Apple Pay in U.S. stores.
This shift begins Monday, August 24, at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations. The company expects to have the hardware in place at all domestic stores by the end of 2026. Fuel centers at these properties are scheduled to receive the update by mid-2027.
For years, Walmart required shoppers to use its proprietary app and QR code system. This move brings the retailer in line with other major chains like The Home Depot and Kroger that already offer contactless payments. Customers can now use their iPhone or Apple Watch to pay for goods without opening the retailer's specific app.
While the company has supported Apple Pay in Canada since 2020, this is the first time the feature will be available for U.S. customers at Walmart registers. The update also covers physical credit and debit cards that support NFC technology.
