Valve Faces Price Hikes for Steam Frame VR Headset Ahead of Launch
Valve faces a clear hurdle for its upcoming Steam Frame VR headset. Recent supply chain data indicates that component costs are rising, specifically for the processors intended to power the device. Qualcomm, the primary chip supplier for the project, is raising its prices by double-digit percentages across the board. This change follows a period of instability in the broader market for memory and storage components. Because of these increased expenses, the original plan for the hardware launch now faces uncertainty.
Initially, Valve positioned the Steam Frame as a lightweight, modular VR solution. The design features a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and options for up to 1 TB of storage. The headset itself is thin, weighing in at 185 grams alone or 440 grams with the full battery-equipped headstrap. Technical specifications remain impressive, including dual 2160x2160 pancake displays capable of 144 Hz refresh rates and a 110-degree field of view.
The price adjustments from Qualcomm stem from a struggle to recover revenue after a dip in smartphone sales. Those sales declines were tied to the high cost of components like NAND Flash and DRAM. Now, the manufacturer is passing those costs down to companies that rely on its chips for other hardware lines. This leaves Valve in a difficult position. If the processor costs rise by ten percent or more, the budget for the Steam Frame project will need significant adjustments.
It is unclear how these changes will impact the retail price or the release window for the consumer model. The Steam Frame relies on Wi-Fi 7 for streaming and incorporates advanced eye-tracking technology to improve visual fidelity. Balancing these hardware features with a competitive price point was already a complex task. With the latest cost increases, it remains to be seen how Valve will proceed to keep the device accessible to the gaming community.
