Ukraine launched one of the largest aerial drone strikes of the conflict this weekend, targeting locations across Russia. Reports confirm at least six deaths resulting from the extensive operation. Kyiv has focused on long-range drone and missile strikes against military and industrial targets throughout the year, marking a significant escalation in tactics.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that air defense systems detected hundreds of incoming drones. Officials in the Moscow region confirmed multiple impacts, including an incident that caused a large fire at a major retail warehouse. Emergency crews responded to various sites across the country, including in the Rostov region, where significant infrastructure damage occurred.
Simultaneously, Russian forces maintained their own aerial bombardment of Ukrainian cities. In the city of Kryvyi Rih, missile strikes hit industrial facilities, causing casualties. Additional attacks targeted the capital, Kyiv, where strikes destroyed a prominent city book market and damaged nearby infrastructure. Local authorities are currently assessing the extent of the civilian impact in both nations.
International airspace was also affected by the escalation. A Spanish F-18 fighter jet, operating under NATO air policing duties, intercepted and shot down a drone that crossed into Romanian airspace near the border with Moldova. The incident follows similar events along the eastern flank of the alliance since the start of the conflict. Military monitoring remains high as the exchange of strikes continues to affect territory far beyond the primary front lines.
