Marvel is officially retiring the Avengers this year, with the best possible replacement

Marvel Studios has announced a significant shift in the comic book landscape following the conclusion of the Avengers: Armageddon event. Earth-616 is moving past the era of the traditional Avengers as the primary superhero team. After the conflict, the Avengers will exist only as a smaller group focused on street-level threats.

Taking their place as the defenders of the Marvel Universe are the X-Men. A new series titled Maximum X-Men launches in December 2026. This squad includes heavy hitters such as Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Psylocke, Firestar, and Justice. Their first major mission involves repelling an invasion from the Negative Zone.

The lineup highlights a return to classic team dynamics. Firestar and Justice are veterans of the New Warriors, while Wolverine maintains a presence across multiple books. Fans can expect a distinct nineties aesthetic for the team as they step into this new role as the primary super-team.

This change comes after events where the nation of Latveria faced instability and the character Doctor Doom went missing. In the subsequent power vacuum, the antagonist Thunderbolt Ross utilized salvaged technology to challenge world powers. The Avengers were forced to operate against United Nations orders to intervene, a situation that ultimately led to the current state of their organization.
