Jackie, the prominent California bald eagle known to thousands of viewers, died on Monday following weeks of intensive care. The raptor had been receiving treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center after sustaining injuries from an attack by other eagles. Veterinary teams identified several underlying health issues, including severe anaemia and significant weight loss, which hindered her recovery.
The Ojai Raptor Center confirmed that her condition deteriorated despite the efforts of specialists and the rehabilitation staff. Jackie was a well-known figure, featured regularly on the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam managed by the Friends of Big Bear Valley. This nonprofit organization tracked her life and nesting habits in the Big Bear Valley area since 2012.
Jackie and her partner, Shadow, had been a pair since 2018, drawing a large audience of online followers who observed their activities daily. The rehabilitation center acknowledged the impact of this loss on the many people who followed her life through the livestream. Staff stated that caring for the eagle was a privilege and expressed their grief in a formal statement.
Official representatives are currently working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to conclude the assessment.
