The Source VR Mod Team has announced that the fan-made Half-Life 2 VR experience is now officially Steam Frame Verified. This status confirms that the game meets specific performance and stability benchmarks required for the upcoming Steam Frame hardware.
Achieving this certification was a technical hurdle for the development team. During initial testing, the mod failed to boot on the new hardware. Subsequent development focused on bug fixes and performance adjustments, including the integration of eye-tracked foveated rendering to ensure the game maintains necessary frame times on the headset.
The latest update provides benefits to all players, regardless of the hardware they use. Notable changes include improved performance for lower-end CPUs and a series of quality-of-life adjustments. These updates address issues with headset view stability on uneven terrain and add visual stabilization for the crossbow.
Additional mechanical improvements in this release affect core gameplay components. The gravity gun now features a weapon laser if enabled, and loading screens are now visible within the virtual environment. Developers also updated the built-in dxvk version to resolve potential startup issues and smoothed controller poses for more natural hand movement.
Players must own the original 2004 Half-Life 2 title to access this free modification. The project represents a community-driven effort to bring the classic PC shooter fully into the virtual reality space, with this recent certification marking a significant step in hardware compatibility.
